Webby Cup a Huge Success
The Limited-Overs National Deaf Cricket Tournament, which is also known as the Webby Cup, was played at Fairfield (South Brisbane Districts Cricket Club's three ovals) with the five state teams competiting each other from 3rd to 10th April. The teams are: Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria Blue, Victoria White and Combined States. The Victorians has two teams so they had "Blue" and "White" attached to it as well as the Combined States which is made up of players from South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory and Tasmania.
All the teams had played 4 games prior to the final. At the end of the games only two teams went into the finals and they are: Combined States and Victoria Blue. Queensland was fourth on the ladder (one win out of 4 matches). Congratulations to Combined States as they have won the final and are also undefeated during the tournament.
There were some good number of people coming out to watch the tournament and has expressed that they have enjoyed it. There were some old cricketers coming out to watch as well, such as Percy Bates, Joe Conley and Ken Donnell, and few others as well.
Queensland has tried their best but unfortunately some of the performances they have demonstrated didn't go very well. Never less, they have managed to avoid one thing: being a wooden spoon team. Hope that QLD team will train harder and improve its skills to get it stronger for the next national competition, which hopefully be held during the Australian Deaf Games in Geelong, January 2012.
During the presentation night held at Sherwood on the night of April 10th, there were 135+ people turned out to enjoy the function. People enjoyed eating Chinese buffet as well as traditional roast, and did enjoy the trophies presentation which was handed out by Deaf Cricket Australia. Congratulations to two Queenslanders: Simon Crust and Justin Bergin, who was selected to be in the Deaf Australian XII for the upcoming Deaf Cricket World Cup in NZ at the end of this year.
On behalf of the Queensland Deaf Cricket Association, we would like to give thanks to those people who came and support us during the tournament. The Queensland team will try its best at the next national tournament and your support to us will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
